Akiva School scoops silver
Barnet took part in the London Youth Games and performed magnificently, as Diane Langleben reports:
Barnet was represented by its number one team, Akiva School, in the tennis tournament at the London Youth Games held on 2 July. Thirty-three boroughs took part in the event, held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, for school years 3/4. Spectators were treated to a nail-biting day as the boroughs’ young teams played some impressive tennis. Akiva’s four players faced stiff competition in blistering heat but kept their cool and made it through to the final. The scores were close but despite Akiva’s brilliant performance, the team finally lost to Merton’s Bishop Gilpin School, Wimbledon, who are past champions at the Games.
After the final match, Barnet school games organiser, Jane Holland, commented that it was the best team performance Barnet had managed at the London Youth Games since the beginning of the School Games initiative.
