Background information on the September 2014 criteria
The Governing Body received 45 responses to the consultation and each one was carefully considered by governors before the meeting. The Governors decided to implement the proposed criteria, which remove the 5-1 ratio for admissions in 2014. Priority will still be given to children from families who demonstrate a commitment to Reform or Liberal Judaism or New North London Synagogue. The reasons for this decision emerged clearly in the meeting and relate to the need for our Admission Criteria to be clear, objective and easy to understand, thus making them more compliant with the new School Admissions Code which became operational from 1st February 2012.
The Governing Body is proud of Akiva’s progressive Jewish ethos and is very clear that this decision in no way affects or changes the ethos of the school.
Additionally, if you are considering applying for a place for September 2014, please be aware of the following advice from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, explaining that local authorities will inform parents of their school offers during Passover that year.
- The DFE has informed us that the National Offer date for primary school admissions will be 'on or about the 16th April 2014. Parents will get an email offer if they apply on line, but all will probably get a letter as well. They have 14 days to reply to their Local Authority. Whether 15th, 16th or 17th, these dates are during Pesach (15th, 16th are chag, 17th is chol hamoed).
- All VA primary schools and academies need to be informed, as will their prospective parent bodies. Whilst those with access to the internet can open it after Chag, and all can open a letter after Chag, this may be an issue for families out of email contact or away from home. This information needs to be disseminated soon, as families often make vacation arrangements well in advance.
